Wedding Photographer Karlsruhe

Documentary wedding stories between the palace gardens, Turmberg and Ettlingen's old town, photographed with Fujifilm medium format and charged by the hour rather than by the package.

Why Karlsruhe is such a beautiful setting for wedding photographs

Karlsruhe was planned on a drawing board, and you can still see it today: the streets radiate from the palace tower like the ribs of a fan. For wedding photographs, that means clear sightlines, open sky and room to breathe. Few city centres feel so spacious. Add the bright light of the Upper Rhine plain, falling low and long across lawns and sandstone on summer evenings.

If you prefer winding streets, Durlach and Ettlingen offer narrow lanes, timber-framed houses and cobblestones, with another baroque residence nearby in Rastatt.

I live in Bammental, just outside Heidelberg. Karlsruhe is roughly 55 kilometres away by motorway. I check the routes between the registry office, church and reception beforehand.

Photo locations in Karlsruhe and the surrounding area

Five places I enjoy visiting with couples. The best fit ultimately depends on your route between ceremony and reception, and the light at that time of day.

Karlsruhe Palace & Palace Gardens

The streets of the fan-shaped city radiate from the palace tower, while behind it the gardens open into broad lawns and mature trees. In the early evening, the façade glows warmly and the shadows lengthen. Between the trees, it is much quieter than on the palace square.

Gottesaue Palace

With its corner towers, this pale Renaissance palace in the east of the city has an almost austere presence. That is precisely what makes the contrast with a relaxed couple so appealing. The surrounding park works well for group photographs with the whole family.

Botanical Garden & Glasshouses

Right beside the palace, the botanical garden has historic glasshouses. Among mature trees, flower beds and glass façades, you can find quiet corners with soft light even at midday. A good alternative when the sun on the palace square becomes too harsh.

Turmberg in Durlach

Turmberg is Karlsruhe's local hill. From the top, you can look over Durlach's rooftops far across the Rhine plain, at its best in the last hour before sunset. You can reach it by the steps or the Turmberg funicular.

Ettlingen Palace & Old Town

South of Karlsruhe, Ettlingen is a smaller, more intimate alternative: the palace courtyard, the banks of the Alb and narrow lanes are close together. The old town feels particularly atmospheric in the early evening, once the day visitors have left.

What wedding photography in Karlsruhe costs

I charge for time, not packages: €50 per working hour for photography and the same for editing. As a guide, each hour on your wedding day takes about one hour of selection and editing. Travel within 30 km one-way of Heidelberg is included. Karlsruhe is outside that radius, so the entire return journey is charged at €0.30 per kilometre.

Small wedding

4 hours in Karlsruhe

4 h photography + approx. 4 h editing: €400
Travel, approx. 110 km × €0.30: €33

approx. €433

An 8-hour wedding story in Karlsruhe therefore costs around €833, including editing and travel. The final invoice reflects the time actually spent.

Non-binding examples. No VAT is charged under §19(1) UStG (German small-business exemption).

Questions about weddings in Karlsruhe

I charge €50 per working hour, both for coverage and editing. An 8-hour story in Karlsruhe costs approximately €833: €800 in fees plus €33 for travel.

Yes, but they are modest. Travel within 30 km one-way of Heidelberg is included; Karlsruhe is about 55 km away. Beyond that radius, I charge the entire round trip at €0.30 per kilometre: around 110 km and €33. I will confirm the amount for Ettlingen or Rastatt beforehand.

I like the palace gardens for a sense of space, and Turmberg in Durlach for evening light with a view. For quieter, winding streets, Ettlingen's old town is a lovely choice. Usually, the best place is one close to your ceremony or reception.

Absolutely. For a small celebration with a ceremony, drinks reception, group photograph and relaxed couple portraits, I allow around four hours. That is €400 for photography and editing, plus €33 for travel: around €433 altogether.

Once you have a date, it is worth sending a short message. Saturdays between May and September are the most popular; Fridays and weekday ceremonies are often possible at shorter notice.
