Castle Wedding at Château de la Colle Noire

July 20, 2022

A château in the hills of Provence. Lavender scent in the air. And two people saying their vows in front of the most beautiful backdrop in the world.

Château de la Colle Noire — once the private estate of Christian Dior — is a place that takes your breath away. Surrounded by roses, olive trees, and the gentle light of the Côte d’Azur, this castle looks like something from a film. When the couple invited me to photograph their wedding here, I knew: this would be something truly special.

Destination weddings in southern France have their own pace. Everything is softer here — the light, the air, the mood. Between May and September the Provence gives you a window of warm golden tones that exists nowhere else. For a photographer this means: no fill light needed, no fighting with contrasts. The sun works with you, not against you.

The day began early. The bride was being styled in the château’s salon while morning light fell through the tall windows. The groom waited nervously in the garden, surrounded by cypresses and the chirping of cicadas. This calm before the big moment — it’s palpable in the images.

The rooms in the Château are a gift for getting-ready photos. High ceilings, natural stone, light curtains filtering the light. I don’t need flash there — it would be almost disrespectful to the light. A single window side is enough for portraits that look like paintings. Christian Dior didn’t choose this place by accident. He understood aesthetics.

The ceremony took place outdoors, under an old olive tree. The guests sat on white chairs, behind them the Provençal landscape to the horizon. As the sun sank lower, the warm light turned to gold — a gift only Provence can give.

Open-air ceremonies are photographically in a different league from civil registries. The background changes with every perspective — lavender fields, the hills of the Côte d’Azur, the old olive tree as a natural frame. I move quietly around the ceremony, switching between wide angle for the scene and telephoto for the emotions. The best shots often happen in the three seconds right after the vows. The release of tension — you can’t stage that.

In the evening the celebration was held under open sky. String lights between the trees, long tables with flower decorations, French wine and Italian joie de vivre. It was one of those evenings you know: this happens only once.

Fairy lights are a wedding photographer's best friend at evening celebrations. They create warm points in the image that guide the eye. Together with candlelight on the tables, they create an atmosphere that no studio in the world could replicate. I work with a wide-open aperture and high ISO values — the medium format of the Fujifilm GFX shows its strength here. Clean images even in low light, with a depth of field that separates the moment from the background.

For me as a photographer this wedding was a dream. Every corner of the estate was a motif, every moment worth telling. The pictures speak for themselves — and they tell the story of a day that was perfect. Not planned perfect, but felt perfect.

Anyone planning a wedding in southern France should take time. Not just for the day itself — also for the days before and after. A welcome dinner the evening before, a brunch the next morning. This gives the photographer more opportunities for honest images and the guests the feeling of being part of something bigger. Destination weddings are not an event. They are a journey.

Wedding in Provence

Southern France is one of the most beautiful wedding destinations. The combination of Mediterranean climate, historic locations and the famous Provençal light is unique. More impressions from France in my Frankreich-Fotografie-Portfolio.

Château de la Colle Noire is located near Montauroux in the Var region. Once the beloved country house of Christian Dior, it is now an exclusive wedding venue with a chapel, rose gardens, and panoramic views over Provence.

Anreise: Nice airport is about 1 hour away. From Heidelberg I recommend a flight to Nice or Marseille and continuing by rental car.

Photographer's tip: For destination weddings in Provence, I recommend arriving a day early. That way we can take couple photos in the golden hour the evening before — without any time pressure on the wedding day itself.
